"Eschewynge of Ydlenesse: Music for Dancing" - Misericordia & Gaïta. Recorded 2003. Released by the artists.
This album was recorded by dedicated re-enactors, specifically as dance music (an accompanying book with the relevant steps is also available for separate sale). As such, it is free of the usual problems of tempo, limited repeats, etc that usually plague recordings being used for dance music. Unlike many artist-released recordings of dance music, it has a broad range of instrumentation, professionally played, with the result that for simple listening it isn't too repetitive or boring (with the notable exception of the first track.) This is one of my go-to albums for background music at events; it provides instant atmosphere without being too distracting. The accompanying booklet has a small amount of information about some of the source texts.
Period Sources: Arbeau (16C), Gresley MS (c1500), Chansonnier du Roi (13C), Vatican Chansonnier (13C) Chansonnier de l'Arsenal (13C), Llibre Vermell (14C), Guglielmo Ebro (15C), Antonio Cornazano (15C), Dominico da Piacenza (15C), Brussels MS (15C), Bod. MS Digby 167 (15C)
